Hitting the Stage!

Journey after High School
Elaine ChaoIn 2003 Jason Tom caught Elaine Chao's beatbox performance on an episode of "Showtime at the Apollo" and that performance inspired him on how she rocked an entire crowd utilizing just her vocal percussion and human beatbox repertoire with no background music. Then in fall 2004 he decided to hit the college books after a two-year break, quit judo training and decided to pursue the performing of the human beatbox in front of audiences on the side. Jason Tom's first audiences were his Kapiʻolani Community College classmates and instructors. Then he proceeded to perform at open mics and audiences there mentioned that they are reminded of jazz musician Bobby McFerrin (who is known for his vocal improvisations) through Jason Tom's live performances.

First Thursdays HawaiiSlam
Jason Tom with iNTREPiD featured in the FIrst Thursdays flyer. On October 2006 Jason Tom made his poetry slam scene debut for First Thursdays HawaiiSlam at the Hawaiian Hut (newly located at the Cupola Theatre second floor of the Honolulu Design Center). His debut "all beatbox" performance scored from the low going high an 8.5, a 9.3, a 9.5, a 10.0 and a 10.2 which entered him into the second round as a top 3 poet. Since then Jason Tom became a regular sign up beatbox poet act at First Thursdays' "no rules" slam. On August 2007 he was the "no rules" slam runner-up behind Bridget Gray and on December 2007 he became the "no rules" slam champ. Jason Tom was last seen tearing it up for First Thursdays' August 2008 "no rules" slam with Hawaiian Ryan and DJ Azia.

Hip-Hopalypse at the Ong King Art Center
During 2007 Jason Tom was in the Ong King Art Center production Hip-Hopalypse directed by See Ellauri. He played "mute" MC Dewm who communicated through dance and the human beatbox. In Hip-Hopalypse Dewm provided live non-mic human beatbox beats for fellow MCs Do (iNTREPiD) and Dune (Harumi the Hymn) to rhyme over.
